Supermarket Eggs

Some time ago I read an item in a National Newspaper about a child who hatched a supermarket egg in the airing cupboard ( where we in the UK often keep spare bed linen and towels by the central heating boiler) Hard to believe but what do I know about it?
Thinking about that again I wondered if any of us BYC friends have actually done this or know someone who did? Hatched a supermarket egg I mean not put eggs in the airing cupboard!

You could try! I had a friend crack an egg from the supermarket to eat, and she found a partially developed embryo in it. Chances are small the eggs are even fertile, let alone viable, but give it a try! There's nothing to lose, and I'd be curious to see how it went.

There are supermarkets that sell fertile eggs but they're labeled fertile. Some people have hatched eggs that aren't marked fertile, but I think the chances are slim. Let us know if you try it!

Some people have successfully hatched free range eggs from trader joes. It def happens.

I think it is very rare to buy a even partially developed egg in a supermarket. Health food store maybe. The supermarkets get their eggs from producers where they usually don't have any males and the females are in cages with egg roll-outs. Mostly Leghorns for white eggs and Isa Browns for brown eggs. If I recall correctly from past research, Isa Browns supply 60% of the brown egg market. There is a store here in Florida that has in the past sold fertile brown eggs, Trader Joe's. I have read that some people bought eggs there and did successfully hatch some out. I believe there is a thread on it on BYC. A big box store I highly doubt it as the eggs are refrigerated and come in on refrigerated trucks but maybe in a smaller store.

There are several threads on BYC about this. Try doing a little search. Some are more successful than others. Not all eggs sold in supermarkets are fertile. I also believe you may have a higher chance of success in other countries than the US just because of the way the majority of our supermarket eggs are sourced.

Thank you absolutely fascinating reading. I have only read part so far but will go back to finish off.
Most people put them into an incubator I was thinking I might pop the eggs under a broody hen when I find some fertile ones of course.
