Hello

Around 6 months ago one of my hens received the Suprelorin implant to force a molt and give her a break from laying to help prevent any future problems with reproductive tract disorders due to a 2 year interrupted laying cycle.

The implant worked perfectly and she started to molt the next day and ceased laying just up until a couple of weeks ago.

Does anyone have any information or knowledge about the safety of the eggs she now lays after the Suprelorin implant is completed? The vent advised me that it is not approved for use in chickens and can't be consumed for food.

But given that the hen won't be eaten for meat and that the fact that she's laying eggs means the hormone implant is no longer present in her system, then the eggs should be free from any hormones.

Does anyone have any further information on this?

Welcome to BYC. I don't have any experience with Suprelorin besiedes reading about it's use to cause chickens to stop laying eggs, as well as it's use in other animals. I looked it up, and the drug info says not to use it in animals used for food. It can be passed in the milk of other animals. I would say if it has worn off, it probably wouldn't be a problem since it is out of her system. You probably haven't gotten many answers to your question, simply because most people haven't used it. Most drug companies put the same thing on most drugs that are used in chickens.

I know this post was in 2016, just checking did you find out whether it is safe to eat eggs after Suprelorin implant wore off?

I am asking the same question as you were. Is it safe to eat those eggs? My hen had the implant 2. The 2nd time it wore off after 2 months instead of 4 - 6 months.

From what I read online:
The implant still on her body, it does not breakdown.
The implant duration of effectiveness is depending on each individual hen's body.

My thought is this - it lasted on her just 2 months which mean the medication/chemical still slowly releasing in her system, but it is no longer effective to stop egg producing. So effectively it is not safe to eat her egg.

My next thought is so when it is safe? A year? On the safe side, it is best not to eat her eggs at all. It seems to be such a waste as it is so much work for her to produce eggs.

I am still looking for the answer to this, but I am incline that it is never safe to eat eggs after implant because it was not meant for food producing animals.

Initially when she returned to egg laying, she laid 1 egg a week, on the 3rd week she laid 3 eggs. I hope she does not produce anymore than that in a week. She is an Isa Brown hen after all, they were created to lay eggs until they die.

If the drug has worn off and she is laying eggs, there probably is not going to be much drug left in her. Most drugs are prohibited in laying hens, including most antibiotics except Tylosin. However many people who have treated hens with egg yolk peritonitis, salpingitis, worming, and respiratory diseases usually wait a significant amount of time, and then use the eggs. That may be a a couple of weeks or a month or so. Most of these things are really up to the individual.
