Swollen foot, black, cracking toes.

I have several chickens who are super stubborn about basically living in a nesting box. Common enough it seems like. I caught one of them going outside the other day and realized that there was something very wrong with her foot.

She has black scabs on her toes, and her skin is cracking and seems fairly damaged. The foot is swelling enough in the middle that it is pushing her toes out in weird directions.

I first thought it was bumblefoot. In fact, I even stupidly tried to cut into the top of the swollen part on what I thought was the "black spot", but it was not... there is no infection inside as far as I can tell. I disinfected, and bandaged her up, and gave her a few days to recover before messing with her again. I've been soaking her foot in Epsom salts for 15 minutes every couple of days

Her other foot is fine, and I don't see any sign of issues with my other chickens. Could her foot have been crushed? Frost bite? I can't quite find pictures online that look like this...

Thank you!

Wow thats odd. My first thought is frostbite but I'm not sure! I'm sorry I really don't know! Hopefully she heals!

I let her walk around outside a bit today... a new wound opened up, split across the most swollen part of the top of her foot, deep, I can see bone inside. I'm going to guess she got her foot mashed by something and broke some toes, causing the rest of her foot to swell. Going to try to build her some type of brace because she obviously can't walk on it at all without causing further damage.

Oh my gosh! Wow thats bad!!! Sounds good! Glad you are keeping an eye on her. Is a vet an option? I have no idea what they would do but maybe they could figure something out. Keep me posted! Praying you can figure out a solution and that she heals! :hugs
