Hi,

Looking for some advice on a sick chicken again unfortunately.

One of my chickens developed a lump in her sinus about a month ago. Looking through this forum I quickly found that it was a sinus infection which was great and I thank everyone for that! Being in AUS I couldn’t find anywhere to buy the recommended medication so I took her to a vet where they agreed it was a sinus infection and sent me away with the medication pictured (CHLORTETRACYCLINE). After about a week the lump started to shrink but I continued the full 10 days which by then it was much smaller.

Fast forward to a week post use and she is a sad chicken who obviously doesn’t feel good. Her eye on the opposite side to the original lump has started to swell and her poop is runny.

Not sure what to do with this girl besides take her back to the vet but I thought I’d ask here first for advice because you all helped me cure another chicken that had wry neck not long ago.

Does she have any bubbles or foam in either eye? Have you seen pus in the eyes? There may be pus in the swollen area of the sinuses or around the eyes. That needs to come out for antibiotics to help. Is there a bad odor around her face? Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG, CRD) are common, but coryza can do that and has a bad odor. Are you in the US or elsewhere? Here many use Tylosin powder in the water or Denagard for MG. Coryza usually is treated with sulfa antibiotics, such as sulfadimethoxine or bactrim (SMZ TMP.) Flushing the eye with saline or eye wash, and applying Terramycin or plain Neosporin ointment into the eye twice a day may be helpful.

Sorry for the delayed response.

No pus from what I could find, I had a gentle feel to see if anything would show but nothing. No bad smells either.

I’m in Australia so Tylosin is a prescription only product here. Looks like I’ll be heading back to the vet and seeing if they will prescribe that for me.

Thank you very much for your advice on things to look for!

Thanks for the tip on oxymav I found a local pet store that sold it. Unfortunately while I was checking her over tonight I think I found the real culprit of all of her health issues currently.

On the side of her neck near the base is a lump about the size of a walnut. Half of it is rather solid but some of it is rather soft like it’s maybe pus inside? It is very red compared to the rest of her surrounding skin. Sorry the picture is not great but would anyone have some tips on dealing with this? Still a few days until there is an opening at the vet

The lump may not be related to the swollen eyes. It could be an ingrown feather cyst, a tumor, or peck wound that has abscessed. If you explore it, you could see if there is pus or a feather inside.
