OOh you hit it right on the head!!...thats about how old they both are!...now, if i get a female..will she fight with my older female?(Daisy is almost 3..)...i think my female is the "Leader" of the pack..well..under me...of course...they all know we are above them in the "pack"..(actually when we first got the Dane..he tried to challenge us also....but we only got him a few months ago....the saints i have had since pups., and have never had any problems with them...)..

If your girl is dominant, then you are going to want to pick a puppy that is low in the pack pecking order. My experience is with working breeds like dobies, rotties, etc. They all have a tendency-particularly the dobies- to be same sex dog aggressive, which is why I will only get a female. I have a neutered male dobe and a neutered female mix. The male dobe is good with the unneutered male neighbor dog over the fence, but that is totally different than having one in his house and on his bed.

I will bow to those with more experience with mastiffs, danes and st bernards as to how same sex dog aggressive (or not) they generally are. However, in your circumstances, since you say your girl is really in charge of the three, I would find a female puppy who is low in the pecking order. Good breeders will know who those are reasonably early.

However... let me make the suggestion that you talk to someone with experience with these breeds before adding another dog, even a female, to the mix. Because unless you handle the boys and their situation correctly, it can escalate and get very ugly. And with dogs this big, someone - dogs and people - could get seriously injured.

Hi Sarah..and thanks for all the sage advice!...yes, i would definatley go back to the trainer that i took my Dane to when i first got him...i brought him to her to get a temperment eval. and stuff..just to be on the safe side...since i didnt raise him myself...and he had started to challenge us a little bit when i first got him...(which he dosent do now at all anymore..)yeah..i think i will take him back to her..just to be safe..because ,as you said..they are big boys!..both as gentle as can be to us(big snuggle babies!)... but, like you said..if a fight broke out..someone could get hurt if they are by a person..thanks for the advice..., Wendy

p.s., i think my girl is dominant because neither one challenges her at all...and a few times when my Dane tried it...played to rough with her..or tried to put his head over her back/shoulder area..(which is a dominant pose..)..she flipped on him so fast it was amazing...and he just sat down or retreated from her...then after she let him know he couldnt do that to her...they started to play again..but, he was definatley more respectful of her after that....so, thats why i think she is dominant...but, i could be wrong..its hard sometimes to tell...

How many litters per year do you produce and how many dogs do have in your breeding program? At what age do you start breeding? I understand what you are saying about the OFA clearances (although I don't necessarily agree completely) but what if I purchase a pup who ends up with bad hips (which can't be cleared on OFA until 2 yrs of age, even a prelim on a massive breed is unreliable until the dog is done growing and of course that takes longer with the larger dogs...the same time your guarantee expires) Are you willing to extend your guarantee to a minimum of 3 years pending hip clearances if the owner chooses to do so. Do you have references available and will you include your vet in your list of references?

Sorry for all the questions. My husband and I have been looking high and low for an ethical mastiff breeder who we can trust and who makes health a top priority.

The photos are lovely, the English Mastiff is such a majestic breed. Perhaps it might be nice to give them English names of famous people. Nelson.....Charles.....William....Diana... your choice, just a thought from me.

Right now we only produce 1 litter a year. Right now we have 2 dogs (our home bred stud and our female) and we are keeping the fawn female from the litter as well.
On a breeding or show contract I would extend it to 3 years. I do have several references I can provide for you as well as our vet.
