Hi everyone im building a coop for my chicks and i cant afford siding and i was wondering of only putting Tar paper or tyvek homewrap which one will last me longer being exposed ro the weather

It will also be exposed to your chickens, who will chew it up and maybe eat it. Also, you need actual wood walls for your coop, preferably two layers, to keep out predators.
Look on craigslist, and at the Habitat Restore, and consider free wood pallets, or stuff on sale at lumber yards. Slab wood from sawmills. Old signs.

Agree with Mary but if forced to do one or the other go with the TyVek. That stuff is pretty darn tough. Would think the chicks would be less likely to mess with that than tar paper.

You can even use a deck stain. Cheaper than paint and you don't use a primer with it- two coats and done. Comes in solid colors too so looks like paint.

Paint it. I've used paint from the Restore, and it was the worst paint I've ever used at $10/gallon.

Anyway, Tyvek (doesn't HAVE to be that brand) will hold up better than felt, will be cooler, and won't smell like hot tar all the time. You could consider some peel and stick ice and water shield, but then you're getting more costly. They also make synthetic felt, which is probably pretty similar Tyvek except for more grippy.

I spray painted my entire coop and used the Restore paint on the inside.

Tar paper or tyvek
I have seen tar paper cabins and camps that have stood the test of time for decades. Tar paper has been on the market a long and is still used a lot today. Where cost is an issue I would go with tar paper. I doubt chickens will bother the tar paper where it is on the outside of the proposed coop.

What specific product are you, OP, referring to when you say "tar paper?" If it is the standard 15lb or 30lb roofing felt that is made today, that will absolutely NOT last longer than Tyvek, let alone the duration that Tyvek has been around. I'm not familiar with every building material though and OP may mean something else when he says "tar paper." Also, Hokum Coco, you may have seen something last a long time that isn't really made anymore, before you think I'm taking issue with your experience. Asbestos siding comes to mind.
