Very well written and kudos to you for doing it right, rather than just going after him in anger. I agree with those who say if you have roosters you should be prepared to cull. If you're not, don't have roosters! Around here, even nice roosters are very difficult to place. There are a lot of backyard flocks in the Bay Area, and most of those are not allowed roosters. The shelters that take them are full, and ads for free roosters abound. Rehoming an aggressive one is unethical, IMO. I would love, love, love to raise some cute fluffy chicks, but thanks to BYC, I've learned that the odds, even with "sexed" chicks, are that some will be male. I can't/won't cull, so it would just be selfish to pass my "problem" on to someone else. So I got older pullets, and an adult hen. Problem solved.

And that is one way to solve your problem...or to never have a problem to begin with. ;)

I had an 8 month old cockerel I was planning to keep for breeding. He started pretty nice but during his first spring hormone surge he started to change. He wasn't treating the ladies nicely and I didn't like the way he was eyeing my dog (old and small, zero threat to birds, eats mealworms off the ground right in the middle of the flock). He was never human aggressive. Nothing was too over the top that I had to act immediately but I was thinking he may need to go. Then he attacked the rooster (the one that spurred my move to the country and changed everything). As fate would have it I had all my stuff out and was in the middle of culling the latest batch of extra cockerels. I scooped him up and did the deed. I was sad about it because he was gorgeous, but the change in the flock's mood after he was gone let me know I did the right thing.

You did the right thing too @Mimi’s 13 And I am seriously impressed you did it all in less than an hour. My first one took over 2 hours, though I did hand pluck.
You know, I think my flock’s behavior change was all I needed to see to let me know I did the right thing too. I’m glad you mentioned that.

I do believe hand plucking will take longer than skinning a bird, even though skinning him was a little difficult in places, but it all came out perfectly in the end.

And talk about perfect timing. That old bird picked the wrong day to mess with your rooster.

Ummm .... to add a little levity, here, have you read the BYC thread on those particular, uh, rooster accoutrements, as a delicacy? It's hoot!
I’ll be honest, I tried to find it to no avail. So sad! I was hoping for a chuckle.

Give it a search - try rooster, oysters
OMG - That whole thread WAS hilarious, for real! Too bad I had not seen this thread before I processed PBF. I most likely would have tried them. I’m not one to eat just anything, but I do LOVE gizzards any way you can cook them and that’s really repulsive to most people. And yes, I love the chewiness of them! Gross, I know. So that’s why I’m thinking I might like them. Who knows!

And for the record, this mean old bird had a pretty good-sized “set” on him, at only 13 weeks. I wonder if there’s any correlation to meanness and size of testicles? There’s another government study worth millions just waiting!
