They lay brown eggs, not white like leghorns

No way, they don't look at all similar

I read they might have white Plymouth Rock ancestry. Which sounds a lot more likely than the previous thing I read, which is white Leghorn ancestry. They look more like Rock crosses than Leghorn crosses, what with the body type and pencilling.

Wanted to share a pic of my best Red Leghorn rooster. He is one of two roosters I ended up with out of the order from McMurray's last year if you remember. The rest of the reds in the order (including the replacement order) didn't make it. I have him over two Brown Leghorn hens. The other rooster has a wry tail. This is the same rooster, two different shots. One in the pen and one in better lighting. He isn't horrible, but they will definitely be a work in progress for a while I'm sure.

Thank you! I am really excited to work with them. They will be more Black-Tailed Red the way I have to breed Brown Leghorn into them, but they will still be nice looking birds hopefully. We breed and hatch for our own personal use so they will hopefully be some pretty little red layers if nothing else. I will selectively breed and attempt to breed them to standard in type and conformation but I’m sure it will take several years.

How much did they cost? Serendipitous, I brought some Buckeye eggs for my college to hatch and I also have exactly 14.

Oh dear, I hate to even admit how much they costed. It gives me chest pain and was rather an impulse buy. They were $130 with shipping. I tend to hyperfixate on things of interest to me, so once I realized I needed Buffs I had to find good ones, so I researched until I found a recommended breeder with nice birds and that's how it happened. Lord, please let some of these chicks hatch.
