The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Also, tiny crests are always noticeable on pullets but can be concealed on males, that is true. So my plan is to only use non-crested white egg laying crele pullets from the F1B cross to breed forward from that point to a Brown Leghorn male. I am in the process of trying to locate a nice standard bred group of Brown Leghorn birds to work with next year.

They look very much like my Browns. I have 3 brown chicks just hatched Ill get some pics over the weekend

This hatch out of the Leghorn hens was another small hatch of just 5 chicks and produced all duckwing chicks also. The chicks appear to have a lot more red in them than any Speckled Sussex we have hatched. I am going to grow them all out and see how they turn out. Since Speckled Sussex are white legged, the white legs would be dominant over yellow. And if the chicks are half SS then they will be white legged. If the chicks are yellow legged they are Leghorns. Either way, I can use them as layers if they are mixed.

Here is the hatch from today. Very orangey red tones in them so they dont look like SS crosses to me. SS and Brown leghorns look very similar at hatch, and don’t have the bright orangey red tones that these chicks have.
