The Moonshiner's Leghorns

My neighbors are tearing down an old lean-to and are going to give us all the scrap metal off the roof. I could use that and then paint my little shed red! I really need a larger brooder area for grow outs that are too young yet to free range, but too big to be in the indoor brooders. A better "in-between" area if that makes sense.
That will work.

I'm so excited to finally have my first two leghorns in 12 years of chicken keeping! I got a pair of brown leghorn chicks. Just from a hatchery, but I'm hoping they turn out decent and I can do a few hatches from them. What should I be looking for as far as quality wise? They're only 3 weeks old so far (almost 4) but they're actually pretty nice temperament wise. Definitely a bit flighty, but I can pet both of them and hand feed them. I'll try to get some pictures soon.

Congratulations on your new Leghorns! What variety did you get?

Thank you! Brown, but I guess from a hatchery that means light brown? I don't know, I'm still learning 😅
The little cockerel, he's very curious and fearless

And the pullet. She's definitely flightier but warming up to me some now.

Can brown leghorn chicks be sexed on markings at hatch? I definitely noticed some differences between these two when I got them, but I'm guessing that was mainly genetics most likely.

Yes, females have much stronger markings at hatch, but it's not 100 percent accurate.
Light brown and Dark brown are genetically different. That's why the hatchery doesn't just call them "brown."
Light brown is gold duckwing, the same color as their wild ancestors the red junglefowl. Dark browns are red partridge.

Huh, very interesting. Well the one I got them from just called them brown 😅
Can you tell which color mine are just off the photos? If I had to describe their color from a pure color standpoint I'd say they look dark brown. But I know a lot of colors don't really correspond to chicken colors.

If they came from a hatchery, they are light browns. They are cute! 🥰
