I'm just a bit surprisedIf she is split duckwing and split black, the black would conceal any duckwing pattern from showing through. Same as a split black and split bronze based turkey. The poults look solid black at hatch. Black is dominant color over duckwing, like it is dominant over bronze in turkeys. Roosters with a split black and split duckwing base may show some red color leakage coming through the black, but the hens wouldn't. Correct me if I am wrong in this.
Agreed. Chicken genetics are a trip. I will take a million pictures as they grow out and we can scrutinize them together. lol If I end up with a few Buffs to hatch, maybe I will luck out and end up with a nice pair to work with single mating to maintain them pure, and maybe an extra Buff pullet to put the Red Leghorn rooster over next year. That would be precious.I don't know...
They are baffling.
I know my friend has struggled to find really good quality Ameraucanas because you have to weed through a lot of Easter Eggers people are hyping up to be "pure" Ameraucana, when actually there is a lot more in the woodpile to them. They will be lovely little layers, nonetheless. I love the look of a little muffed EE. The same friend who gave my son "Owl," the Splash Ameraucana, is giving him a rooster from the same line. Mind you, these aren't exhibition grade birds by no means, but he is excited about raising a few more little bearded cuties.I'm just a bit surprised
The other blues were blue as far as I remember without much leakage, not even on the rooster (if there was some it wasn't a lot.)
Extended black split to wheaten produces gold leakage all over the hens, (I know from crossing a Dominique over a wheaten Ameraucana.) I assumed that duckwing would do the same thing but a bit less. I guess it's more recessive than I thought, or Dominiques are actually some kind of melanized birchen base?
At any rate, her E/e^Wh chicks look like they will have a lot of leakage (no surprise and they also have the Columbian from the Buckeye.)View attachment 4097187
No current pictures but their wing feathers are black with some reddish pattern.
Is this code for "Mooney is off work and is going to take some pictures of his Leghorns now?"
Im off work but won't be taking any pics. Lol, I'm tired and will be lucky if I get anything accomplished except maybe a nap.Is this code for "Mooney is off work and is going to take some pictures of his Leghorns now?"
I'm hoping that, too...Is this code for "Mooney is off work and is going to take some pictures of his Leghorns now?"
I completely understand. I am burning my candle at both ends lately, and December can't get here fast enough. I hate to wish my summer away, but between keeping up with class work, going to clinical 2-3 days per week and working 3 12 hour nightshifts per week, I am a cross between a walking zombie and a raging lunatic lately. The chickens and turkeys are a nice respite for my mind to focus on when I need to step away from it all for a bit. Enjoy your nap!Im off work but won't be taking any pics. Lol, I'm tired and will be lucky if I get anything accomplished except maybe a nap.
They are beautiful birds! I love the deep red on them. If my husband wouldn't send me away to some kind of home for crazy people to live if I brought in more chickens, I would get a few Buckeyes. (I only kid, my husband adores me. That's how come I have so many chickens!Kayla, you asked about my Buckeyes
Well, they're my mom's, not mine really, but theres some bantams and LF that she's growing out. They kind of segregate in the pen because they are two different hatches
