The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Haha! Ringnecks I'm guessing? They do taste pretty good honestly, but they're a bit tougher and drier than chicken. With a hint of the gamey taste. I really like it in them though. We make these awesome pheasant enchiladas that are so good with it. They are very pretty. No, I never eat mine. We hunt them pretty often out here though and do eat those. I've never eaten the quail either. I've eaten quail before, but mine are just cute pets. I bought them on an eBay sale from some guy in SC years ago, I bought 12 eggs, he sent 15, and every single one hatched. Those were my first shipped eggs, and I was like 11 or 12 so I was super proud of myself. I sold about half and kept my 4 favorite pairs. Of those, I still have two pairs left. They turned 7 last fall, which I'm pretty sure is quite old for bobs. I'm hatching as many of their babies as I can this year. I love those silly little birds and don't want them to die out. I should probably bring in some fresh blood though. The quail and pheasant eggs I do eat, and those actually taste amazing. Very rich and flavorful. The quail eggs are crazy tough though, we actually bought a special cutter for them. I've dropped quail eggs multiple times and the most I ever damaged one was a little dent. I dropped it on the cement garage floor. I was planning on incubating it, so I just smeared a little nail polish over the dent and it still hatched. Crazy bird. The chicks can be real finicky and fragile, but I usually can keep them alive pretty well. They just love to die. Sounds awful but it's true, lol.

Um..... yeah...
Could be drugs! :lau
My mom always told us she didn't care if we had pets, but never any birds. For some reason she hated birds. Well, that didn't work out. 😅
I think they're growing on her though, but she'd never admit it. Luckily dad loves them.
I really love red golden pheasants. I'd try those. And peacocks. I've experienced all of the common poultry except quail, pheasants, and peacocks. (I've hatched button quail but I sold them off right away so it doesn't count, I wish I could keep them for longer!)
Here's a video I took feeding some of my ducks the other day
I admit I'm more of a duck admirer than a duck enjoyer. I will admire them from a distance! But I already know what it's like to own them. I've never tried Muscovy's though, maybe they are more like geese?
I really admire your set up though. I'm always looking for inspiration.

I had been checking out some 55 Flowery Hen eggs on ebay from a seller that was NPIP, but I decided to focus on a few varieties of Leghorn instead. They are a cool breed though, mille fleur and barred at the same time. Autosexing at hatch and the males look completely different than the females.
These kind of 55s?

I thought these were 55 flowery "leghorns" and then I think "swedish" flowery hens. Idk, and idk anything about the latter.
But anyways these were some I had. I think I had four. Three were gold duckwing and one was silver duckwing. They had barring and mottling.

Someone is trying to recreate them but I don't think they have the right type of mottling or barring for the autosexing trait Maybe KF should share the info about the hatching eggs on their thread

One of my pigeons thinks she's a Leghorn. All the eggs here except one are from her

She keeps laying eggs without brooding on them. Her mother is like the opposite. She lays one egg and then she broods on it, so they end up hatching one baby instead of the usual two.

Yes they were ringnecks. I kind of wish I would have took them now. I would have tried to make them into pets and started a new project I don't need. lol

We have hatched coturnix quail before and they seem very easy to hatch. She gave me eggs that had been in the fridge for who knows how long, and they had been unturned, but I put them in the incubator and got like an 80% hatch rate. It is crazy how forgiving and tough quail eggs/chicks are.

Bad news with the Buckeye eggs I gave to a friend. Only two of the eight that went into the hatcher actually hatched. I guess they probably had incorrect heat or humidity or something in the hatchery, because my mom never had a problem hatching them. :(

They really are.
The person who hatched the Buckeye eggs has mostly quail, so maybe her incubator just had bad settings that only quail can survive.

I will look for the thread and add the link in just a bit. I have encountered the seller before on a Fb group I am on, he told me he had his eggs listed on ebay. I have actually talked to him on messenger and was going to buy eggs from him. Maybe next year. :)

Do you have any buffs?
It is possible for Marans to carry Co, it doesn't really express well on Birchen.
No I don't have any Buffs or anything with Columbian free-ranging. The only Co birds I have are the Red Leghorn rooster and his offspring, and my Buff Leghorn chicks. The Red Leghorn roosters have always been confined, never free-ranged. The hen sorta has a Marans type and tail, and she resembles my Olive Eggers that are Marans and Legbar crosses, except she and her sister are red and lay medium brown eggs where the OE's are birchen like a Marans or barred/crele. So I'm assuming maybe they are an OE x OE cross probably and they inherited the brown egg gene from both parents. But honestly, who knows with weed hatches.

Most expensive goose

Wow that is one expensive goose! I had a bad goose experience from my childhood so I personally wouldn't give a nickel for a goose, but hopefully the exhibition breeds you want are more gentle and less demon-like.

If you prefer the look of Eastern Wild Turkeys, you can obtain a special permit to own them. Also, you can never free-range them because they will leave. Even if you hatch them from eggs. I have had two experiences where I owned Wild Turkeys, and both times, they went to the mountains and I never saw them again. I turned a group of juveniles I hatched from eggs loose with the chickens on the first experience, and they left. And then a friend gave me a young jake that ended up being highly aggressive, so we were planning on eating him. Before we got the chance, a snow storm brought a tree down through the fence he was in and he went to the mountains, never to be seen again.
