The Old Folks Home

The forecast for below Springfield was for snow today but it isn't right at the moment. I'm not eager to have snow but if it is going to snow this winter, I wish it would do it already. Get it done and over with.
My brother lives in Sarcoxie and used to work in Carthage, now retired.

I grew anehiem peppers and jalapeños last year. Both did well. My DB even made pepper vinegar with some of the jalapeños.

Hot peppers is one thing my wife will use out of the garden. She likes them even more than I.

I grew tomatillos one year and I was so busy dealing with tomatoes that they basically went to waste.   I should figure out a green chile sauce that incorporates them and can a bunch.  Favorite use, though, is in crockpot chile verde.

How do you use them?
roast the tomatillos and blend them with a green tomato, jalapeños, sour cream, cilantro, avacado, lime juice and salt to taste. Addictive!

Chick Whispers - ditto for the snow - we've got heavy, wet "widow maker" snow. I am suited up and at least prepared to open up the end of driveway where snow plow buried it. Oy!! I do it the old fashioned way - with shovel.
Be careful out there Diva! I've done that at a younger age and it would take a long time even for a modest driveway. Thank goodness I had a great neighbor with a snow blower! That garbage plowed back up in the drive is usually twice as heavy!

I'm sorry you lost your hen.
Thanks. Hope your little chick gets to doing better.

My only resolution for this year is to make a better sick bay in the coop! Ok maybe another one - learn more about chicken diseases.

They had forecast rain for the weekend but seem to have missed that so far. Due again to have rain in the forecast mid week. It is breezy and very nice. I will hope the snow clears out for SCG and the wet makes a stop in Ron's area. We start to get weekends like this and forget we have 6 more weeks before the last frost date so no point getting frothed up and hitting the garden stores yet. The flock is out turning over leaves and nibbling sprouted grass. The neighbors have music going by their pool to start off a Super Bowl party. I am sitting on the patio taking it in.

Tomatillos-- having no experience with these , we took a leap and bought a few to add to an already made salsa, and ther rest as they say is history. THe flavor of the t. is NOT what I would eat as is. Definitely needs a few partners.

5-6 tomatillos- medium chop
bunch of cilantro-- rough chop
few cloves of garlic-fine mince
ripe red tomatos if desired-- rough chop
hot peppers if desired- fine mince

Mix together with cesear's salad dressing. Ages well!!

Now I love tomatillos but only in a salsa.

Maddy got an Easy Bake oven for Christmas so she's been busy all morning making little tiny snacks for Super Bowl. Her birthday is on the 5th and one of her gifts from me is a chef outfit...complete with the cutest little chef hat.

I like sweetcorn and pinto beans in my salsa. Jalapeños seem to grow the best here, had good luck with Fresno reds one year. Pickled they are hotter than jalapeños but they have a yummy sweet flavor. Jalapeños I like stuffed with a mix of cream cheese, sour cream, sharp cheddar, bacon bits, and then grill them.

Hi Ron hope y'all get some rain!

SCG I am sorry about your chick. I did have a cockerel that had his leg pulled out of socket by a predator and I wrapped it in vet wrap and it did take abt. 6 months but he did recover and in the mean time he brooded several batches of chicks for me and was a great with them! And I agree with CC you would benefit from a greenhouse greatly. :)

Chickisoup sorry about your hen.

Diva be very careful in all that snow!

Peppers and Salsa sound great! I bought some from Gatlinburg, TN. a couple years ago that had pineapple in it and it was a hit with the entire family!
