A video from last week that i want to share. I have a daily discussion with Karen Duck:
She insists that now is the time for ducklings!
My Mallard Duck a few years back went Broody in early March. The Temps got so low that I knew they would all die. She even left the nest when they were all 3 weeks old. She had hatched out 11 of them and they all lived! They would stay huddled together at night and when they were cold so they made it without her or any extra heat. I thought for sure the freezing days and mornings would kill them but they all survived.

Everybody!
I have been very busy over the weekend, first the duck run needed a temporary roof to prevent an further flooding events. We covered the whole wire-roof with pallets:

Then a thick tarp went on top of that:

Yes, early March is fine, i guess even for Ohio! - But starting in the middle of December would end in lot's a tears…
I actually enjoy the daily discussions with her! Today she just ate the fingers of my left hand… 😉

They also were in a dog pet gazebo with plenty of wood shavings and also tarps covering all sides except for the door to the front. I am sure keeping the wind and weather off of them helped them a lot.

Here are some pictures from the inside of the now water-proofed duck-run, i made a little bench for my weak bones:

Of course they fight for the spot under the bench every evening...

For today, i just tilled the compost floor and Sunny Sunshine got busy foraging for worms:

This is what the roof looks from below:

It looks really dark in there on the picture because my phone was focusing on the background. Here's another picture:
