The proper Japanese beetle is Popillia japonica, it's not exactly the same - but yes I can believe that the end result can be the same or at least similar.

Thankfully I haven't noticed the larvae damaging plants in our containers (where we can absolutely always find them at the end of the season). It could be that it's because they only appear at year's end and would do damage the next spring but they don't get the opportunity because we clean up the soil for the next generation of seasonal plants (tomatoes etc).

Last time we held a vote on this the ducks were all in favor of maintaining the annual soil cleanup.
Same here! - The ducks are all in favor of soil cleanups. They happily remove bus, worms, larvae, tomato plats, salad, kale, … just leaving fine crumbly pure soil behind. Fertilized too.

No, not digging with my hands! - I use a Spade.
And i also have a decent electric tiller, but the duckies are better: They till, remove bug-larvae and fertilize in one go.
By hand I meant a shovel and nothing electrical or gas powered. I really didn't think you would use your bare hands to do that Frank, I'm not that bad off YET!!! LOL

Of course i knew what @Luv Ducks meant! 🤣
But i am also a very opportunistic person and followed one of my best friend's advice:
»Better loose a good friend than skip a good joke!«

But y'all would be surprised how much i actually dig with my hands. When i come back from the garden in spring my hands up to the forearms are covered in dirt. - So are my cheeks and my forehead. And don't look at my fingernails…
