1759 - The first music store is opened by Michael Hillegas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1862 - Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia (which lasted several days); Union troops storm Marye's Heights and are driven back with heavy losses.
Commanding generals were Ambrose Burnside (Union) and Robert E Lee (Confederate).
Confederate casualties: 5,300
Union casualties: 12,600 (2/3 from today's action)
 
14 December

1744 - New Hampshire militia raid British Fort William and Mary.

Yesterday, Paul Revere rode up to tell the New Hampshire militia that Fort William and Mary, near Portsmouth, will soon be reinforced. As the fort is only guarded by a captain and five men, the militia decide to seize the opportunity and raid the fort for the ammunition and powder stored there. The garrison is easily subdued and the stores distributed to the nearby towns in preparation for the upcoming and inevitable war.

1799 - George Washington dies, age sixty-seven, of a throat infection.

1911 - Roald Amundsen and his team reach the South Pole after a journey of nearly two months.

533 - Byzantine general Belisarius defeats the Vandal army at the Battle of Trimarcum. This breaks the Vandal power and clears the way for Belisarius to reconquer Italy from barbarian rule.

1791 - The Bill of Rights is ratified in New York.

1944 - Major Glenn Miller, USAAF conductor of the Glenn Miller Band, and his plane are lost over the English channel. Also in the plane were Lieutenant Colonel Norman Baessell and the pilot, Flight Officer John R. Stuart Morgan. No trace of them has ever been found.

1653 - Oliver Cromwell is installed as Lord Protector of England. He remains dictator until his death in 1658.

1714 - George Whitfield is born (according to the old calendar). He is one of the principle preachers and leaders of the Great Awakening in 1730 - 1740.

1770 - Ludwig van Beethoven is born.

1773 - Boston Tea Party - Sons of Liberty dressed as Indians break open 340 chests of tea and dump the contents, weighing over 92,000 pounds, into Boston Harbor.

1944 - The Battle of the Bulge begins. One out of every ten Americans killed in the war died here. Casualties were approximately 77,000 for the Americans and 90,000 for the Germans. Two links for further reading:

That's interesting! I honestly never knew Beethoven's first name!

546 - Ostrogoths under King Totila capture Rome. He bribed a Roman garrison (which was manned by mercenaries) to let him into the city and proceeded to plunder. He was a Christian, so unlike other captures of Rome, most of the population was not murdered.

1903 - The Wright Brothers make the first successful airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville was at the controls and flew for twelve seconds, traveling 120 feet. Later, Wilbur traveled 852 feet in 59 seconds.
