This Day in History…

I know this is very unrelated to the former sobering facts and discussions above, but I would like to add that On This Day in history (2019) my 1st hen laid her 1st egg!

20 December

1803 - A ceremony in New Orleans completes the French transfer of the Louisiana Territory to the United States. Only twenty days earlier, Louisiana had been ceded to France by Spain, which had held control since 1763. The first governor is William C Claiborne.

1860 - South Carolina becomes the first state to secede from the Union.

1941 - The American Volunteer Group, known by their nickname Flying Tigers, fights their first battle in China. They were led by General Claire Chennault. After a year of great success the Army Air Corps incorporated them into the regular forces. The Flying Tigers' history is quite interesting; here are some links in case you're interested:

2019 - Space Force is created.

As an aside, Chennault is buried on the left side of the hill beneath Lee's house, near General Douglas MacArthur's father, John.

1620 - The Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock on this day according to the Gregorian calendar; on the Julian calendar it was December 10.

1861 - The Medal of Honor is created by President Abraham Lincoln. The first soldier to receive it was Private Jacob Parrott, along with six others, for their role in destroying several Confederate bridges and railroads.

1968 - Apollo 8 leaves the Kennedy Space Center to orbit the moon.
