1804 - Napoleon crowns himself Emperor of France during a ceremony at Notre Dame.

1823 - President James Monroe outlines the Monroe Doctrine in a speech to Congress, stating that the American continents are not available for European colonization.

1859 - For his raid in Harpers Ferry, John Brown is hanged in Charles Town, (now West) Virginia.
 
03 January

1749 - New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth founds the town of Bennington (now Vermont) named after himself. This is the beginning of Vermont as a colony.

1777 - George Washington's army in another surprise attack defeats the British garrison at Princeton, New Jersey

1944 - Major Gregory Boyington's Corsair is shot down by Japanese Zero fighters. He is captured and spent the last twenty months of the war in prison camp. The ads in this link are annoying but the article is interesting:

1907 - Maria Montessori opens a school for children of the working class families living in the Roman slums. The school incorporates the techniques she developed while working with mentally disabled children; these techniques come to be known as the Montessori Method.
 
07 January

1607 - Part of Jamestown, Virginia, the first English colonial settlement in the Americas, burns for the first time. The church and most of the supplies are destroyed.

1610 - Galileo Galilei spies Jupiter's four moons through his telescope. This is the first time the moons have been seen by a human.

1718 - General Israel Putnam is born. He commanded the outnumbered Continental militia at the battle of Bunker Hill.

1815 - Battle of New Orleans: General Andrew Jackson's army - manned by volunteers of all classes, pirates, prisoners, Indians, and regulars - defeats the British army on the Plains of Chalmette.

British casualties: 2,000+, including General Edward Pakenham, commanding

1835 - General turned President Andrew Jackson hosts a dinner to celebrate the reduction of the National Debt to $0.00 for the first and only time in the history of the United States.
