This is what a raccoon can do to wire

yeah, me to... I've never had a trap damaged like that... this trap must have had Arnold Schwarzencoon in it. I did have a juvie coon in the trap once whose feet fit through the holes in the bottom of the trap. He figured out that he could arch his back to raise the cage off the ground and walk away with the cage. I found him and the cage about 100 feet from where I set it... I imagine that since he could only take baby steps it probably took him several hours to get that far.

The strongest stuff I can find around here is 2 X 2, per inch, welded 16 ga (.063) Also, every post I've seen says to put the hard ware cloth around the bottom 3 or 4 feet. Seems to my pea brain that the coon can climb the 3 - 4 ft to cheaper wire to gain entry.

i don't even think I could do that with my bare hands.

Thats because your a monkey, not a raccoon.

I would assume most people would love to use all hardware cloth for their runs, but there are some people like myself, who are on a budget and cannot afford to do so.

But that is just crazy what that raccoon did!!! Scary stuff! I may be jinxing myself, but I've never seen one around here.

That's astonishing. I do think though that a racoon trapped in a cage and fearful for its own life probably has more motivation and energy than one trying to get IN to a "cage." But the point of capacity and strength is well made nonetheless.
I trapped a tree squirrel in a havahart trap, smaller size but similar construction, and later in the day found the squirrel had a bloodied nose. Cause of its bloodied nose: nose pressing HARD against the cage wire, bending the strong hardware mesh in a small place. NOthing like your photo of the coon damage, but impressive for a small animal.
