my americauna rooster starts to crow around 2:30 in the morning. thought they were suspose to start around sunrise. any idea why he starts so early?

Because he can..... That's what roosters do....many roosters crow all day long, too.

But basically, there's something that is waking him up, perhaps a light that comes on in the house he can see, or something is moving outside he hears. He's letting the world know he is there and on guard.

My neighbors have a motion-activated security light in their side yard; deer moving, or other critters will set it off. The light then wakes up my dominant rooster and he crows. If I turn on my bathroom light, he crows. I now keep a night light in the bathroom so I don't have to turn on the regular light when I get up in the middle of night.

i let them listen to a radio all day in the building, soft music, but he was doing this before the radio, thanks for the info,my chickens are crazy

My rooster starts bellowing a good 1.5 hours before first light....and doesn't stop until dark!

I start my truck at three am in the morning to go to work. I let the truck run to warm it up. If I turn the truck lights on the roosters start crowing.

I got up early this morning around 3 am and never heard him crow until i was moving around in my mobile home, then the crowing started,i guess he hears us in here moving around and its enough to set him off!

Edgar the Easter Egger is the more vocal of our 2 roos. Often when he crows at odd hours of the night there will be raccoon tracks around the coop the next morning. But he will also crow if there is a full moon, an almost full moon, if any light is turned on in the house, if one of the dogs is let out of the house, and I swear, if one of the cats meows, in the house with the windows closed. I understand why so many towns ban roosters. His saving grace is that he is a good flock protector.

Haha, welcome to the noisy world of roos! X3
Roosters crow all day, every day.

Usually they only crow when they feel someone is threatening them. I know that when there is a loud bang outside, or a truck rumbles by on the road, my roos go crazy. If one rooster begins to crow, it's usually followed by a cacophony of boys, as well.

Hope this helped. In short, roosters crow whenever they feel. :)
