Hello, I'd love some thoughts on whst's going on here......I went to check on my hens on Sunday late afternoon and found my lovely Tess in the coop, puffy and sitting in the corner. She turned around and to my absolute HORROR, her butt was very bloody. My husband had let them out in the am and said she had been fine at that point. Long story short, I soaked her and took her to the vet.
1) not egg bound (confirmed via xray) or prolapsed vent/cloaca.
2) determined it could either parasites or bacterial infection.
3) meds- meloxicam, TMS and panacur.
She's separated and eating/drinking/defecating normally. No more blood and the tissue swelling has gone down significantly. She's pretty peppy and alert, acting like her normal self. She hasn't laid an egg since and her cloaca/vent is pulsing. She doesn't feel egg bound. I've been putting some Vaseline on the area, alternating with silver honey. Today I felt a little grit like substance just inside her vent and realized it's attached to a blood clot or bruised tissue inside so I left well enough alone. I'm not sure if it's uric acid kinda getting stuck to the injured area somehow? I don't know enough about chicken anatomy.
I'd love thoughts on what people think this is caused from. It seems like a lot of blood. My biggest fear is it could be trauma from my call duck....the coexist peacefully and have never ever seen the duck even try to mate the chickens. Usually the duck gets mad if the chickens are too close to his girls, chasing them away.
