Cleaning the pine shavings from the water has been an unending task (and I've only had my chicks for five days!). Hadn't thought about raising the waterer (duh), so thanks for the tip!

As for the spout and ball, is there a learning curve to train them on this after they've been using a gravity waterer?

On both occasions that I have used the spout and and ball waterer, they took to it instinctually- even while a dish was available. They seem to think it's fun?

That was the case with every hatch so far- approx 5

Chicks are really curious so after a few days they will likely figure it out themselves, but you can like have water come out of it, or bring the chicks up to it and have them peck it.
