Turkey Talk for 2014

Ya, your looked like they had been fighting like my toms were.

They fight all the time, but my Tom is definitely in charge over the jakes. They are still chasing each other and fighting but not as violently. I am still trying to decide which one to invite to Easter dinner. I thought I would invite one of the self blues, But he was in full show off mode today and he is so pretty....what to do.... I wish I could sell them.

Yesterday I found that one of my hens has a large gash on her side :( I only have 1tom to 6hens so I thought this year would be better. But maybe he was clumsy since it is the start of the breeding season. He was the beta Tom for 2 years and is now the only tom so he never did get much practice. I hope he gets better at it.

I do regret processing my Alpha Tom and keeping this one. I wish I did it the other way around.

Fingers crossed she heals up well.

Also now that breeding has started I should start seeing eggs in the next few weeks. YUM.

Usually toms will not fight with hens like they do the toms. I hope you get it figured out. You might also check into possibly taking them to a livestock auction or listing them in the local papers.

I went thru this with one of my tom's. He wants to do his mating dance on top of her instead of on the ground. GRRR so I had to put him in time out till she healed up. Now he is more careful.
I am also trying to train a young BR tom. He keeps getting on sideways and I gently get him to turn in the right direction then in a few
minutes he's back sideways again! UGH!

I hope your hen heals up quickly! Yeah for turkey eggs!

This happened to us just a month ago and it cut the skin right by the side of the leg. Sadly she never made it but that doesn't mean yours won't!! Good luck and I hope she gets better!!

I love the self blue (lavender) birds. Gorgeous! I plan on growing out any I get this year & replacing several blues in my flock to eradicate the black from the babies. If I have a lavender tom over blue hens or blue tom over lavender hens then I only get blue & lavender babies. With blue over blue I still get 25% black poults.
