Hello everyone,

Our Tom has what seems to be major blistering and swelling on his hock, with the swelling going down his leg. While he does attempt to walk he can only make it a couple steps with assistance. We first noticed the problem around two days ago, he seems slightly sluggish but continued to walk around. This eventually developed into limping, and then not being able to stand at all.

I had only noticed the swelling in his foot at this time, when there were no cases of bumblefoot I assumed he may have fallen or landed wrong. Later that night I noticed that his hock looked slightly swollen, upon touching it the area began to leak fluid. Unaware of the damage I took him inside and started to inspect the area, which is when I found the many blisters hiding under feathers. We had popped a few blisters just to relief pressure, and he seemed to.stand better afterwards. He has been under watch and isolated ever since then, we have refrained from popping anymore blisters incase of infection. Additionally, he resumed not being able to stand well.

He has still been eating and drinking, seeming alert and as normal as he was before the injury. He responds to noises, chirps when pet, and remains curious. At this time we are unable to take him to the vet, which is why I'm asking for help here. ANY advice is greatly appreciated, thank you so much!!

I am unsure since I was not present at the time of his purchase, here's a picture though! I know he was bought at tractor supply.

He's Broad Breasted Bronze. A meat turkey.
I think he's got really bad gout. It's common with the variety. Could probably try to treat with Apple Cider Vinegar in the water, & 3 Capsules of Tart Cherry Extract 1-2 times every day.
I say 3 Capsules since it's bigger then a chicken.

TSC sells two types of meat turkeys, the BB White, & BB Bronze.

Thank you for the reply!!

Is gout something turkeys usually recover from? Or is there anything particular that causes it aside from the breed? Despite him being a meat turkey our family is deeply attached, it would be heartbreaking to put him down. However, I will keep this in mind for future purchases.

Gout as far as I know a chronic condition. It can be managed, but not fully cured.

Genetics, amount of protein fed, & amount of calcium fed are a few things that play role.
A Genetic condition.

Too much protein.

Too much Calcium.

It's okay to get attached to your food, but you also gotta remember it's providing food for the family. All that counts is that it had a happy life, & nutritious diet before it gets culled.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions!

I do think there was a misunderstanding. We bought these turkeys as pets and have no intention of pulling or processing the birds. Do you believe gout is a manageable condition?

I think of poultry as both pets, & food(My Pet Chickens on occasion become food). But eventually your meat turkey is gonna no longer live peacefully with the amount of weight he'll end up gaining as he keeps growing.

I just butchered a BB White Turkey a couple days ago with a processed weight of 40lbs.

I said gout is manageable.

I will keep that in mind and try to manage his weight and growth, if I do see that he's living uncomfortably, I'll make the correct choice.

Thank you again for your advice and help, I'll start treatment as soon as possible. Pete thanks you! <3
