Hi everyone, it happened in seconds, I went inside for 5 minutes came out to these two hunting dogs in my yard feathers from my rooster everywhere. I couldn't find my girls looked rooster over he looked to be ok he ate bread and is walking around but legs seem to be bothering him. I found my girls in bushes they were totally fine! He fought them got the bad end of the deal. How he survived i don't know. Should I just take him to the vet or what?

Most vets won't take chickens. Look for neep punctures. If he is just a little balder then make sure he is kept warm and hydrated for a day or two till he's over the shock. If he has deep punctures then you'll have to treat him.

I've had birds attacked by dogs it's just part of raising them unfortunately. If he's in good shape without any serious wounds I would keep him home. It would be a good idea to keep him relatively warm for a day or two. When in shock birds body temp drops.

Look him over very thoroughly, esp where feathers are missing. Offer raw yolk and anything else he wants to eat. Poor guy! He deserves a treat 🥹
I totally agree he will get whatever he wants. He did a fantastic job protecting his ladies ❤️

Good idea to treat him for shock right away. Give him some warm sugar water. One cup water with 1 tsp. sugar dissolved into it. If the dog had hold of him it could have compressed and shaken him, and you might see bruising over the next day or so. He'll feel stiff and sore and chickens bruise green.

Update! My boy is doing great along with his ladies! Currently in their pen eating sunflower seeds!! Lots of treats
Easy on the goodies! Good nutrition is required, especially now. Take some of their normal feed and make it into a mash with some warm water, make it like oatmeal. They usually think that is better than cake and ice cream but they are still getting what they need. Treats should be no more than 10% of their diet.
