uggghhhhh Huge snake in the barn yikes!!!

Holy smokes! I'm glad we don't have big honkin snakes like that in Iowa. And yes, the golf ball would have killed the snake anyway. I think I would have wet my drawers if I saw a six foot snake up in my coop.

Yes and no, some as pets are some arent but you have to be very careful with either and wash your hands before handling incase there's something on you that smells like food. In the wild most snakes will be very defencive as instinct tells them anything bigger then them is going to eat them. Remember when you see a snake acting mean its because its just as scared of you as you are of it and thats its way of trying to keep you away from eating it. Aggression is an incorrect term to use for them, its all defense.

well you can tell I am not a snake person lol!!! I am just leave me alone and I leave you alone unless you are eating my critters or near my kids......I got to wondering if that big sucker didn't go and lay eggs or have babies in my barn......I keep thinking every time I peep in there I am going to see a big ball of slithery people chasing snakes coming after me ugghhhhhhhhhh

He would have died anyhow from the golfball, they cannot digest it so we probably saved him from an agonizing death.

Actually he probably would have just regurgitated it

I had to relocate three snakes today. We have those 3' long garter snakes that just cause trouble. No with the birds, but with my koi and goldfish pond. They have the tendency to go into the water and to catch the smaller fish. Next they pull them out of the water just to find out that they cannot eat them. The poor fish then dies and I find it next to the pond. Plus they eat all the baby fish. Well I caught them and bought them down to the lake. Let then eat there what they want. I'm sure I will have to relocate more soon.

i am so scared of snakes OOOOOOOOO! i saw a baby rattler in chicken pen yesterday hubbie killed it. then today i made him do the egg gathering and he found another one in the pen again. I love my chickens but i'm soooo scared to go in there now!!! i hate this fear! Is there anything i can i put out to get rid of snakes and not hurt chickens. i can deal with rats!!

I don't blame you for killing the snake, 'good' snake or not! I would have done the same thing. I have a toddler that plays in the yard near the chickens, there is no such thing as a 'good' snake around here.

A rat snake wouldn't do anything to a kid....when I was a kid I went out and caught snakes...when I was too young to do that my dad caught them and showed them to me and my brother. I for one would sure as heck rather have rat snakes around "my kids" (if I had kids), than the wild rodents that would be there otherwise carrying ticks and fleas and god knows what diseases that could be passed to children.

Nothing wrong with teaching kids to respect and understand these animals instead of just making them fear them, theyre in much much less danger of a snake, especially a non venomous very benefitial ratsnake then they are of a stray dog wandering around. There is a place in the world for everything, even these creepy crawlies, who actually play a huge role. Besides having more of the 'good' snakes around means less of the 'bad' ones, as often the good harmless snakes will eat them, and all the rodents. I always recommend to teach kinds to respect and understand something before scaring them and telling them its better off dead.
