I have 4 8 week old chicks that we hatched under 2 silkies. Currently they are outside in an Omlet Go Up (where they were hatched), plus run. They have done so great, but the last few nights they have been coming out and walking around at 10:30pm, 1 and 2 am…just walking around in their safe little run. I have never closed their door, but the mamas always kept them inside till they emerge about 6:30 am. We have had a full moon. Do you think that is enough light to draw them out to explore?? I thought they couldn’t see at night? I’m not worried about safety, (we also have an electric fence) but more….it is ok for chickens to be up and about at odd hours? The silkie mamas do not come it, just the babies. I could close their door each night, but they do get up so early, honestly, I don’t want to go open the door at 6:30. Just wondering if it’s ok to just let them do as they wish.

And just fyi, I have another bigger coop right next to this baby coop, with 6 big girls, and an auto door, we just haven’t integrated them all yet. That’s a whole other question.

They can see at night if there is light to see by. I would close them up and not offer food or water. They would probably be safer from nocturnal predators.
