For those who don't know I have a stray goat that wondered into my backyard one day and is now basically mine
. I feed her every day, so she's never left. (I did ask around to be sure she wasn't somebody's lost goat though)
She has never been super friendly but this morning when I went out to feed her, I gave her an animal cracker like a do sometimes. And for the first time ever she came up to me and took it from my hand!
Although they aren't healthy, I was very excited, so I gave her a couple more. I needed to get some work done so I eventually had to head inside and sit down at my laptop but around 30 minutes ago I made a quick run to my local feed store and picked up a goat halter, lead rope, and some goat treats.
I went home and held the treats in my hand. just like earlier she came up and at them. I got her to walk over to the corner of her run-in and as she ate treats, I slipped the lead around her neck and held her against a wall while a put a halter on her. I tied her up to the post of her run in with the lead. I waited for her to calm down and eventually she did. I gave her some more treats and for the first time ever she let me pet her. I dewormed her and trimmed her hooves. I wasn't really sure If I was trimming them correctly, but they were quite overgrown so it needed to be done.
With a few more pats, I clipped off her lead and she ran off. I kept the halter on so hopefully it will be easier to catch her next time. I'm going to try again with the treats tomorrow because she's had so many today. I hope I didn't lose her trust when I caught her but I'm so happy I was able to catch her so quickly and pet her for the first time ever! I also decided to name her Birdie!
Thanks for reading my crazy story!
