I have a rooster with very long, curved spurs. We have been lucky thusfar as all of our roosters have shed their own spurs over the years. Enter Ricky. Ricky is a bantam la fleche... so when I say these things are huge, I really mean it. He's a little thing.

Are there any considerations or best practices for roosters with very large/overgrown spurs? I'm going to have to take them off... or trim them... or something.

Yes, you will need to intervien.
Spur growth has been known to cripple a rooster left unchecked.
Also spurs can severely injure a hen during mating.
I have seen photos of curvy spurs that have grown up into the roosters under belly.

This is what I do. After dark I go out to coop with a pair of sharp garden prooners wearing a head lamp and cut my roosters spurs back to an inch long.
After dark because he is easy to catch.
It's part of good flock management.

I agree.

Thank you for your input. I think I'm making this a lot harder in my head than it needs to be.

I don't touch them unless they're in a path to pierce their legs. My old boys have very large spurs and do just fine
Very interesting. I appreciate you sharing your experience. His are not pointed in a precarious or harmful direction. He is a hugh strung little guy and I am honestly afraid of causing problems that currently do not exist. Thanks again.

I use one of those Amope things to blunt my guy's spurs. I do that mainly because they tend to get sharp. He's also a banty, and he has to really dig in with those spurs on my larger girls. I just trim a little and dull them. No blood.
