Hello all,
Long story short, I have had a poorly hen the last 2 weeks. I've had a string of bad luck for my poor new hen. She's only a young girl about 24 weeks. A couple of weeks ago I noticed she had a snotty stinky beak, so for I have spent every am/pm cleaning her nostrils every day and trying all kinds of methods to help get the smell down.
I am now at the point where there is only a small amount of build up within her nostrils am/pm but it is definitely getting better.
I have used vetRx in the past and had lots of success and I do believe for the most part it helped my little chick. It states it is safe to put directly on chooks, and to put under their wings etc. Because I felt that this was helping and soothing for my hen I was diligently applying a generous amount on her to ensure she would be able to breath easy throughout the night.
As far as aiding her through her snuffles I think it has been very good however, a few days ago I noticed her skin around her face was becoming very flaky. I was horrified over the last couple of days to see that her face, eyes and anywhere that I rubbed the vetRx, down her next etc, her skin is raw and peeling off in huge scabby and what must be painful clumps.
To say I am heartbroken is an understatement. Poor little girl has already been through so much the last few weeks and I cannot bear to imagine how uncomfortable and sore she is right now. What's worse is I was unknowingly burning her essentially. Her poor neck is scaly and the scabs are stuck within her feathers, it must feel unbearable. On top of that she is still suffering a bit with the snotty nose which I remove the crusts am/pm still.
Everytime I bring her in now I am literally in floods of tears at the sight of her. So please please be careful and not to make the same mistake as I have. Poor angel is struggling to even close her eyes properly due to the crustiness. I was able to apply a layer of vaseline around her face which I gently painted on with a clean paintbrush so I am praying this affords her a little bit of relief
