I sure hope he gets better.
I know people have suggested this already, but I am going to do it anyway... GET STRONGER ANTIBIOTICS! If your vet won't do anything more, get a new vet. With the looks of that wound, I would be wanting IV antibiotics and injections daily. Strong ab's should have been started right away as soon as the wound happened. I would get a second opinion anyway if it is not greatly improving soon. I know you don't want to lose your horse, I hope he gets better soon.

my dads stud di something simular he flushed it out 2 times a day with the water house and betadine and something else (unsure of what) and kept it bandaged to keep flies off... he also gave him antibiotic shots daily... he healed nicly though he had an awful scar... it took many months though... don't give up on your horse

If he didnt break the bone, I dont see why you would put him down. He probably severed the tendon and that is 99% of the time a permanent thing, but he will not be miserable his whole life! Just not 100% sound. Serious injuries like this take a lot of time. I had a friend who had the exact same thing happen to her horse and it looked identical. It took almost a year of constant care, but the horse is sound and jumping again. Just give it time, and get a different vet.

also, it shouldnt last that long anyways. you should be changing it twice a day. if you leave it on that long your asking for an infection. keep it clean and keep changing it.

ok as im reading more it sounds like this vet has no clue what hes talking about. you must keep it clean and keep changing the bandages. also, every other day take the bandage off for about an hour or so to let it try some. if any of the tissue is dead it will need to be trimmed off. high doses of antibiotics will help prevent infection or nip it in the bud. you can get a suringe and put cool water in it and add just enough idodine to change the color to a tea color. squrt that in any deep areas or holes and then rinse with clean water. then bandage it up good after it is clean. common sense here: infection is a big issue.....but dont clean it? that doesnt make much sense. also running cold water on both the hind legs several times a day for 10-20 min will help with the swelling. Run it for about 5 minutes on the front to help keep the front from swelling too much from compensation. good luck and keep me posted. ive got plenty more advice if you need it!

That wound didn't look like enough to put him down right off. I would keep it SUPER cleaned and have him on antibiotics. When you remove old dressing, take a soft bristle toothbrush and gently scrub the area with anitbacterial soap. Rinse, apply the meds and wrap back up. I would clean it 2-4 times a day depending on the oozing. When you see blood/ooze coming through the bandage it is time to redress. I would have him on penicillian for sure. You can get it and keep it at your home in case you ever need it. We do our own vetting for our animals and others animals. That wound looks like it is mostly flesh ripped off more than anything (just by the visual) I have gotten in resuces with injuries just like this. It is fairly easy to heal up if you stay on top of it and keep it from getting infected or flies laying maggots in it. Be careful of proudflesh developing in wounds too. Good Luck - Hope he heals fast!

Tea Tree Oil has miraculous healing and disinfecting qualities. You might call your local Health food store and talk to the person who knows. I use it on a lot of things animal and human and am amazed by its healing qualities. It looked bad, but not bad enough to put him down. Hope he is better!!!

If you want to search youtube for some wound washing videos. It may help you get some insight on how to do it. I know this will work out for the both of you! Chicks_N_Horses has the right idea too! Keep it up, your doing great!
