Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Happy Thanksgiving he is well.
We are having a turkey breast scalloped potato and such fresh cranberry made.

Glad you were all home for Thanksgiving.

I picked another bag of apples from my tree since it's going to freeze tonight. I think I'll make a bunch of applesauce and can it this week. My new apple peeler/corer will make it easy.

It works great when the apples are round, but not so well for odd shaped apples. It misses some of the peel, but I don't mind a little peeling in the sauce.

Hey y’all, sorry to interrupt -

Been bouncing around the forums for a while now as we pre plan our chicken game for either this spring or the next!

My current issue is that the kids want silkies, I want laying hens who may have decent conformation if the kids get involved in 4H, and my wife wants EEs for colorful eggs.

Oh, and we are in Seattle, so no roosters!

My wife asked if EE/silkie crosses are a thing. I can see they are based on Google, but it’s not like hatcheries sell them as far as I can tell. The kids like silkies because of the goofy feathering, and I’ve spoken to someone in the silkie thread and am confident they could do ok in the climate here with appropriate preparation.

Do any of yall keep something similar? Where do yall get your chickens? Last time I honestly just ordered from MPC, but that was over ten years ago.

I had responded to that post over on the silkie thread. Keeping them out of the rain here is the biggest problem.

Ive been having an issue with the moorhead (black head feathers) since I'd added in new blood. It's against standard for partridge in silkies and would be a disqualification at a poultry show. Fairs often don't follow breed standard. 4H they also can do showmanship which any bird works for.

Yes you can have silkie x EE. I have one old hen who is that cross. Her sister is silkie x ameraucana. Used them to add blue egg gene in some of my birds. It's not stable yet so I can't ever guarantee if a bird will lay blue from those pens. Was working on getting the silkie conformation back first.

EE and ameraucana both are pretty laid back when with silkies in my experience. They don't tend to pick on them.

I can't really guess on sex until at minimum 6 weeks or older. Partridge is the only color that lets you sex them fairly easily by color. Grey (silver partridge) is harder. The other colors all look the same in male and female so have to look at face and feathers when they get adult feathers in. They can be difficult to sex until they crow or lay an egg.

Made broth over night with the turkey carcass. Got a 3 qt soup for the freezer plus 4 pints of broth out of it. The soup and broth might be my favorite part of the turkey. I used a dry brine on the turkey this year, 24 hours, and it not only made the turkey delicious, it improved the broth. We won't eat the soup right away. I don't want to just eat turkey for days. lol
