What does "dusting" the coop mean? Sorry to be so dumb. Mix it in with shavings? I have an 8 x 10 coop with pine shavings on the floor and a little DE lightly mixed in. Since I only have three birds, I scoop with a litter box scoop every day, so my shavings have not been changed yet. Do I need to do that? My three hens do not use the roost or the nest boxes. They are not too bright, I think. The only one laying is the black Orp and she lays on the floor of the coop in the same place every day. I have tried a cat litter box nest box, milk crate nest box, plus have three built in nest boxes. Have tried shredded paper, hay, and shavings in all of them. They will not even get in them.

I never knew chickens could be so complicated....or am I just simple minded?

Just take the dust (it comes in a cannister with a shaker style top) and literally shake it around the shavings, like a salt shaker. If your roost is flat, you may want to shake some on top of the roost too.

Thank you! This is going to be a lot less work than I thought. I thought I would have to hose out, scrub, disinfect the whole 8 x 10 coop. With the weather so cold and damp, I figured it would never really get dry and then the chickens would end up with colds or pneumonia or something else. I will be headed for Del's first thing in the morning. My hubby just made me a Mudslide, so the night is looking up!

Thank you all for the advice. I should have asked here first instead of getting internet overload!

No, you don't have to disinfect, just dust with Poultry Dust or Seven. The mites thrive on their hosts, but dusting the coop is probably a good idea too.

It is dust with permethrin in it, same as the spray.
The spray I told you about is way easier to deal with, and less messy.
The coop is way easier to deal with the spray, rather than the dust!

Hmm... still thinking before I hit the grocery store...

I'm going to grab some cheese at TJ's, and possibly a little fruit? Having no stove whatsoever is bothersome.

I can remember having the range go out when we were living in the Camas area. I went to turn it on and all the sudden I have 240 volts arcing at the controls. To say the least that scared me good. It took the landlord nearly a week to replace the range. I did figure out how bake cookies on the BBQ.

I haven't gone to the store yet. I'll get the veggies.

I know we'll have cider there, (yum!) but should I pick up some bottled water as well? I don't remember seeing that on our list.

I have about a half of a case of bottled water in my cooler, plus a pack of Coke and Fresca.

Ok, so the mite spray can be used instead of the Poultry Dust on the coop. Thank you for the picture. I will price it at Del's, then compare to mite spray at Petco. Thanks again for all the help!

It is filling if you eat enough. LOL.

Already talked with Christina (sorry Christina I lost you on the phone. Was in a bad spot). I have a crockpot I brought with. Or if some one else is bringing one too...it is all good.

should have asked this days ago....but...does anyone have any meal worms that they would like to sell....I want to start raising them to give for my birds. I will pay for them if anyone is interested.
