Way's to reduce heat lamp temperature.

I did not get my chicks yet.

My 250w lamp with a protective grid, it is at 18 in from the bottom of the brooder. It create 120°F. I checked with 2 thermometers. I placed a aluminium for human food in the grid as show. Is it safe, there is 350°F on the aluminium sheet. But it's barely warm when I touch it. The temperature is around 85-90 when I do so. Is it safe?

I could raise the heat lamp, but it would be outside of the brooder, probably direct contact with the metal mesh wire 1/4 in. Would that be safer?

Is there other way's to reduce heat?

I have my heat lamp outside of the mesh (chicken wire) on my brooder. The lamp has the cage on it and that's the only part that directly touches the wire mesh. The light has been on for almost 5 weeks and has been fine. I've had friends tell me that flappy chicks can hit the bulb and cause it to shatter and reign down hot fire, so I prefer to have another barrier between them and the light. That being said, chicks are pretty good at regulating heat and not as fragile as most think. I don't really follow the whole start at this temp and decrease...I just keep a moderately warm spot and watch for signs of over/underheating and adjust the light as needed. Hoping to evict them to the coop soon!

Best way to reduce heat is to get a lower wattage bulb. The ones from the reptile section of a pet store are safe for use around birds.
