Weird Growths on Hen - No other symptoms

Hi!

I have a 2 year old Lav Orp, Flip, who is my most favorite girl. We recently rehomed our roo, because he was a little too rough with the girls. Even with saddles. Ratio was 1:12.

The other girls are in various states of recovery from his “love.”

When holding flip the other day, u realized she smelled so badly. An infection or rotten smell. I was terrified she had fly strike. Gave her a bath, happy to report NO maggots/fly strike. However, found these.

My initial thought was trauma from the roo or ingrown feathers (if that is a thing). I cleaned her well, sprayed vetericyn and hit the run and her with some ElectorPSP / to keep flies outta there!

Any ideas on what these are? Thank you!

What’s the consistency: hard, soft, squishy, fluid filled? Do they get bigger or smaller, softer or harder, change color? Do they bleed or ooze or crack or are they dry and crusty? It is weird she has several. Proud flesh (exuberant regrowth of tissue after injury)? Multiple cysts or abscesses? Insect related lesions (small fly strike or hypodermic bots (one large maggot that lives under the skin)?

Wow! Thank you! These are things I should have thought about. These are relatively new as I haven’t been as hands on as I have a newborn.

I did not touch these today, but the one on the middle back is hard. The feather shaft was poking me because it was rubbing up against it. When cleaning today, nothing was rinsing off - no active bleeding.

I have not noticed oozing, but I haven’t been the best chicken mom becuase I have said newborn who apparently isn’t as impressed with the hens as I am.

How would I find out if it’s a maggot in there?

Should be a small air hole, might ooze pus if a giant maggot. It is strange they extrude from the body, most injuries should be a hole or cut. Any chance you want to cut one open and sees what’s inside (pus, blood, maggot, solid). Warts could be another possibility. Saw a mass on a dog once that was filled with hair, some sort of feather cyst is possible too.

Didn’t notice an air hole and no oozing. That seems like a good sign. Especially after being submerged.

I don’t think I want to cut one open. I’m not experienced enough, and I definitely don’t have enough pain medicine for her to do that.

One could be a tumor, injury, cyst etc but 3 really starts to look like warts or something similarly spreadable. Tincture if time/benign neglect and sunshine is often curative. Otherwise something like blukote or strong (7 percent) iodine might help (don’t put on open wounds or cuts or healing tissue) but on growths, warts, proud flesh or other excessive growth lesions it is fine. You can only get strong iodine from someone with a DEA license (just like Sudafed!) like a vet or certain pharmacies.

Vetricyn is fine.
Not only may blukote be detrimental for a chemical standpoint,
it makes it hard to keep a good eye on a wound.

I’m hoping it’s just trauma from the spurs and not something more nefarious. Hopefully the extra tlc will help her heal.
