I've always used golf balls to test my broody hens before I give them real eggs, and they've always worked in the past. This year, three broodies broke the day I moved them to the broody nest. I have one more lady trying to brood, and instead of putting her on golf balls I put her on four real eggs that another hen had been sitting on and abandoned the day before (since they were there and probably already dead). That hen sat beautifully!
I was wondering if my broodies are getting wise to the golf ball trick, and thought I'd buy some ceramic eggs to test them with. The eggs come in white, brown, or multi colored. I'd like to buy the multi colored since it will be easier to tell which are real eggs and which are fake eggs when I'm gathering eggs (I tend to leave golf balls in nests to discourage egg eating). However, chickens see color really well. Has anyone had experience with the pastel eggs and the chickens figuring out pretty quickly which eggs are real and which aren't?
