What are Production blues... and what lead to this question.

The owner of Kahoot's has his own jet and is going to fly 800 in from Arizona! Isn't that something?

Must have a pretty good mark-up on his products to afford his own jet. :^)

Sapphire gems are an Andalusian mix of some sort I think? Supposed to be good layers and heart birds. Hoover's has a new one in the catalog called a sapphire splash that is a similar colour but a lighter bodies bird, build more like a golden sexlink but in lavender. Both lay brown eggs.

Hello! I got two Production Blues today :)... and 8 other chicks of different breeds :hmm (I had intended to only get between 4 and 7, but then one thing led to another). Chicken math has severely affected me! Each were $6 each, I couldn't find what Privett sells them for.

So, a total of 10 chicks! My dad wanted a Naked Neck and a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (because he said they looked cool, despite the fact that I was going for high egg production). They also had Golden sex-links, and I read those are good layers, so went ahead and got two of those.

List of the chicks I got:
2 Black Australorps
2 Production Blues
2 Gold sex-links
1 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
1 Naked Neck
1 Black Copper Marans sex-link (a cross between a male BCM and a female Barred Rock)
1 Easter Egger (I have an 1 EE right now, her friend got killed by a coyote :(, so I got a new one)

Overall I'm happy, even though the price was a bit higher than usual (to be expected, not every chick is flown in on a personal jet).

I bought 2 Production Blue (Rhode Island/Blue Australorp) I call mine Rhode Island Blues. LOL I just like the name better. But they are the sweetest birds and started laying around 4 months old. We only pay $2.50 a bird from our feed store. Good Luck to you.

I too was thinking that production blues might be sapphire gems, as Hoover calls them, or Sapphire blues, as Murray McMurray calls them. From what I've read, they are a sex-linked cross between an Andalusian rooster (not sure which color, but I'm guessing splashed because I'm guessing the other colors may not produce the desired sex-link effect) and a barred Plymouth Rock hen. The hens are blue, similar to a blue Andalusian, and the roosters are blue or bluish with some barring. The hens lay brown eggs. To my knowledge they are fairly new in the USA and were developed in the Czech Republic or some place like that. I too think they look like beautiful birds! I'm not a huge fan of hybrids (at least not super-commercial ones) but when I'm ready for new chicks I might get some. I love the blue color in poultry too.

I got a production blue 1 day old pullet chick this May from my feed mill. She is a cross of a blue astralorp and a RIR. She lays large brown eggs and is a beautiful blue-gray color. She is a large bird and very friendly.

Here are some photos of the Production Blues:

And of the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (at least, I hope that's what it is, it looks rather unlike some of the photos I saw on the internet)
