My chickens are the noisiest bunch of hens ever. They squawk, cluck, chirp, growl, purr, cheep, and buk, all the time. I keep thinking they're either being attacked, or laying eggs. I run out and nothing. They look at me like "what?" They're not fighting, and they free range so they have lots of room to get away from eachother. They eventually will quiet down, but all of a sudden, it starts again. I've been out there when it happens and to me it doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinalry is going on. Does anyone else have yappers like this? Any ideas of why they're making such a racket?
I also have a BR hen that seems to be scolding me all the time.

Really, she follows me around clucking this low, growly kind of cluck, but she's not being aggressive at all, just yapping at me. I can't imagine why, unless it's because I'm not giving out treats at the moment.

Maybe it's chicken pms...

Mine always get noisy when I arrive at the coop -- they also come running. I think it's just saying, OK you're here now, where are my treats?! If I'm not giving treats that trip, they wander off and get quiet in a minute or two. Or most of them do. One in particular will complain until I leave. She will get up on the roost and baaaaaawk baaaaawk at me, over and over.

My hens do the exact same thing. I think that it's because they see me or one of my family members and can't understand why they're not getting yogurt, or getting let out of their pen to free range. x] It's like cries of frustration.

I go down to the coop when I hear them making a racket too....usually I can't figure out why since there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. However, I did discover that we had a 'small critter' that was sneaking around the coop and it's presence would set off the bunch...

Nothing that a little 'snap' wouldn't take care of..... silly lazy farm cats! They must be laying down on the job.

Mine are largely silent unless someone is out in the yard. They are near enough to my back door that when I go out they start baaaak baaaaking at me. I have windows open but I hardly ever hear them.

Mine do the same...at least my teenagers do. They are 13 weeks old and are a bunch of chatter boxes. Oh and don't even get me started on my 6 week old Polishs'. They are the loudest chickens I have! Constant high pitch cheeping I have ever heard! I think like pp have said, they just want a treat...any treat, they don't care!

Glad to know mine aren't the only noisy ones! They get up under my feet all the time too, trying to trip me up and perhaps make me spill treats for them? Clever girls...lol! They've come pretty close, but I've managed to stay upright. If/when I do fall, I'll be the one doing the squawking!
