What are your favorite veggies to grow for your chickens?

I want to grow some extra veggies just for my flock. What are your chickens favorites?

Zucchini. Thank goodness! Planting winter squash or pumpkin will give them fresh veggies in the winter as well

For me it’s kale, hands down! The plants get huge and will stand all winter except for a very deep freeze so they have access to greens most of the year.

I have zucchini planted already but not winter squash yet I’ll probably plant that next month

Spearmint because it smells good and it spreads like mad. Also daylilies because I get to enjoy the beautiful blossoms and then when I'm dead-heading the blossoms that are wilting the chickens get to eat them as a snack.

Don't wait on winter squash. It takes about 100 days to mature. You quickly back into first frost.

Peas, alpine strawberries (which I grew as groundcover, so the chickens are welcome to all the fruit). Cauliflower and carrots do double duty, I eat the curds and roots, they love the greens and root tops.

Mine don't like zucchini but will nibble at gray and yellow squash, go figure. I don't like zucchini ether.

Weeds!

That sounds so Grinchian. They get kitchen scraps from garden stuff too. Carrot peels, cucumber peels, greens, tomato pieces, strawberry tops. And I planted mangelbeets for them. I don't like beets.

Anything in the brassica family: cabbage, Brussel sprouts, mustard greens. Also turnip and radish tops.

Chickens are not as picky about quality as most people. They do not mind holes in lettuce leaves (from bugs or slugs), tomatoes with bug bites or sunburned spots, and so on.

Depending on what you grow and how picky you are, you might have lots of things for your chickens just from what you plant for yourself, even without planting extra things specially for them.
