What bait for possum?

We had raccoons, possums and coyotes! We have a guardian dog now, but before that we baited them and shot them. We used canned cat food mostly but also marshmallows and chicken. Anything super smelly works good!

Possums reproduse like crazy, kill one and there is a dozen in his place. I would look into some repellents as a more permanent option. Seems like they hate mothballs

you may want to check your security and ensure your enclosures are predator proof. If a possum can get to your chicks, I guarantee that many other animal can. Killing one predator will achieve nothing but revenge, which isnt a concept animals are familiar with. Prevention is a better fix in my opinion.

Oh yeah, I also meant to point that out. I trap and eliminate problem animals to win those battles, but predator-proofing your coop is the only way to win the war and avoid losing animals to them.

Thing is, theres no telling which animal you'll catch. Could be a different possum. Doesn't necessarily mean "revenge". And even if it does, if you catch the very same predator, that won't bring the chicks back.
Seems pointless to trap and kill an animal when you're able and planning to reinforce the enclosure's security anyway.

Unfortunately, had a case where one of my baby chicks was killed by a possum a few hours ago. I already purchased a trapping cage of adequate size, but I'm unsure on what to use for bait. I also want to know what I can use to poison it. I don't intend to release it alive.

This will kill anything that drinks it and really fast. So you really need to make sure only the predator you want to kill can get to it. A small handful of golden marlin fly bait mixed in soda pop or something sweet like that. They drink it and die within a couple minutes. Raccoons and possums literally get 20 feet away and some die right next to it. It can easily kill pets to, so be very aware what can get to it. Also get rid of the body so nothing will eat on it and also die. This is only for extreme measures. I much rather people do the most humane thing which is to catch in live trap with tuna and relocate to a near bye forest.

This is a common misconception. It is actually not humane to do this. You are introducing an outside animal into another animal's territory. It's like putting a new chicken into an established flock. It will not go well with the introduced animal. It does not know where to find food, water and shelter, and the established animals are not going to welcome it with open arms.
