Hi BYC community! I have been reading up on epsom salts and the many ways one can use them for chickens who are ill. I would like to treat my flock to a spa treatment and give them epsom salt baths when they are stressed. What brands do y'all recommend? I'm also thinking about administering some to my rooster who has recurring digestive problems. Is there a brand of epsom salts that can be used internally that someone has found they like best? If so, let me know. I'm curious to see what you all suggest and about your experiences with epsom salts. Thanks!

Get just plain epsom salts from any drug store or grocery store. Don’t buy the lavender fragranced or fancy kinds, just plain magnesium sulfate. You may find them in the laxative aisle or foot care area. It is a strong laxative, so I would not give it orally. It is sometimes used as a foot soak or a flush when chickens eat something toxic.

Brand should not be that much of a concern, any will work, just get plain Epsom salts ( magnesium sulfate) without any added essential oils. What kind of digestive issue is your rooster having?
He frequently gets impactions. I'm not sure why, but he did go through a traumatic crop injury which I'm thinking may have a lot to do with it. His crop drains slow and sometimes food gets stuck in there.

What exactly do you feed him and do you offer grit?

Giving a chicken a bath or a soak is not exactly unstressful.
I recommend you not doing so if you are thinking it will relieve stress.

Yeah, I have some epsom salts for myself but I didn't think those would be safe for my chickens. Too fancy for them. I'll be sure to look for the plain stuff!
