What breed are these ladies?

Every single one of these I've seen so far has had yellow legs. As of yet, I've only heard of them laying light brown. In at least one case - I haven't double checked the others - the buyer paid for Barred Rock.

If everything points to BR, why would you assume it's a Marans?
I'm mainly talking about this thread. I haven't delved deeply into the wonky BRs, but what little I did read said something about buying at feedstores, and that's a mixed bag in and of itself.

In this one especially, these don't look like BRs to me, they look like CMs I've gotten before from hatcheries. The fact that BR is in those CMs muddies the water. I'm not saying anyone is wrong here. They could very well be BR mutts. I'm just sharing my opinion for what little it's worth. Though now that I think about it hatchery CMs are basically BR mutts so...what were we arguing about again? 😅

Yikes...bad quality of BR. They look beautiful regardless. But I want a decent pet quality BR from the hatchery if I buy BR. Not a hick up of bad quality of barred genes. lol
Well... then don’t buy from Hoover’s. All the BRs I’ve seen from them this year have looked like that. Also, if you want good quality BRs probably not wise to buy from a hatchery anyways. 😬

@MysteryChicken got some heritage ones that are really nice.....but yeah, AVOID hoover's. I don't know what's up with their parent stock.

While Heritage breeder are superior. But every time I look them up on instagram. I cannot really like their body structure. They look more meaty like boilers. They definitely have better barred marking. It crisp! But I don’t personally like the meaty look. I like BR with a body look of the right specimen. I hope I don’t upset people with a pitchfork...it just my opinion at the end of the day. 😅

I'd also like to know where you're getting your information.
I don't believe every hatchery is mixing BRs into their CM lines.
But even if that was true these birds were purchased as BRs. Are they all also mixing CMs into their BR lines?

The birds in this thread were purchased as BR? Or are we talking about another thread? I'm getting super confused! And it all depends on where they were bought as BR. I wouldn't trust TSC to label anything properly.

I got the jump start on the line of questioning from this site, actually. BYC is kind of like my wikipedia for chickens, haha. But Poultry Keeper lists BRs as one of their parent breeds along with several others. The stuff concerning hatcheries is probably mainly anecdotal; people have been getting CMs from hatcheries for years that lay lighter eggs and have yellow shanks. I'll keep digging though, to see if I can find more explicit sources.

Also, I posted pictures of CMs from both Hoover and Cackle with yellow legs, so that's part of it as well.
