I want to add some more chickens to my flock in the spring, and I’d like a breed that’s typically broody as I’ve recently lost my Silkie.
My problem is that I’ve got some quite mean hens within my flock which would be a slight issue as my Silkie always got bullied off her nest whenever she was broody. (I did separate her but it would be nice to not have to)
Now I’m fully aware every individual chicken is different but I’m curious as to which breeds are typically higher in the pecking order🤔
Just wanted to know what everyone thinks 🙂

Some of my Australorps go broody -- maybe 1/3 of them.

I've also had about half my Brahmas go broody.

Australorps tend to be pretty laid-back in my experience but not submissive. Brahmas tend to be big girls and well up in the pecking order in my flock. But I do have to say that most of my birds are mellow sorts.

One of my 2 Mottled Javas went broody but the other didn't. Mocha is a DETERMINED broody who has sometimes drawn blood in defense of her nest. The other birds are terrified of her when she's broody. :D

Too bad you're on the other side of a major ocean. She's probably just the sort you need to keep bullies in order (she never bullies others, just defends her nest vigorously).
