Kookaburra is a mixed chick. His dad is a Black Copper Marans.
Mom is a Red Orpington roo over a Speckled Sussex hen. She was orangey red colored (she looked orange next to my RIR). This is mom as a pullet. I’ll find a better pics and update. Kookaburra was a surprise hatch. He was supposed to be from my SLW Wyandotte hen. But all those chicks have been black with rose combs. The only other hen in with this roo is my RIR, and so far they’ve only produced black chicks with red or copper leakage. I don’t think the Wyandotte or RIR hen could be the mom.
Kookaburra is chocolate colored like my chocolate Orpington. But also has more other colors going on. The breast feathers are just coming in. On his ride side, the feathers appear speckled, like the Sussex. But on the right side, the feathers are beginning to show gold or red patterning without speckles. His legs even seem to be chocolate brown over white.
I know it’s early, but would love to hear your guesses. Even though I’m pretty sure Kookaburra is a boy, I’ll keep him long enough to see what he looks like and I’ll be sure to post updates. Mostly I hatch black chicks. Occasionally red, blue, & or splash. So this one is kind of fun.
