What does cull mean?

No one wants a animal to suffer... We had a chick hatch with spradle foot and put a bandaid around both legs to help him, he grew perfectly normal and the bandaid came off. We have nursed others hens who were not accepted in the pecking order and were literally beat up and getting pecked to death by the others. We removed her from the coop and kept her isolated, once her wounds healed I had to hand feed her in front of the others to show a domination and they did leave her alone after that. We love our peeps but we also love our beagle who recently had two chicken dinners and the third I found with her feathers removed off of her back and traumatized. Things happen naturally you have to prepare yourself to do what is best for the animal and in some cases culling is required. If it is not your choice then get to know someone who can help you... watching a wounded animal suffer is more painful and wrong to prolong.

A cull by definition is an animal which does not meet the basic desired criteria for which it is being grown.
In the case of chicken a cull may have one or more of the following traits:
1) Too small for age
2) twisted beak
3) curved beak
4) leg problems (problems walking)
5) twisted neck
6) signs of an illness

Cull doesn't necessarily mean to kill. It can also just be used to say someone is rehoming a bird as well (to simply remove birds from the flock).
