hi everyone! I have a pair of call ducks right now and I am planning on breeding them this spring. I would like to expand and get another breed. If you recommend a breed it'd be great if you could list some pros and cons:) some of the breeds I'm interested are Anconas, Magpies, Runners, Appleyards and Muscovies. I am looking for a breed that is easily tamed, personable and lays relatively well but this is not a deal breaker. Thanks for any suggestions!

Pecans are a great choice in my opinion

I just thought of a con master Quacker does not do good with other ducks but that is probably just personality

Australian Spotted ducks are our favorites. They are the best layers of the bantam breeds, great foragers, and excellent mothers. Their eggs are the size of chicken eggs so no conversions are necessary when following recipes.

I love all Ducks.......Muscovy are not a breed I would want, although I know they make great pets also.......I think it is a personal choice and what your expectations are in the Ducks you choose????

Research breeds and then decide.......All of us here on BYC love Ducks and really can not pin point one Breed you should pick?

I wish you the best !!!

Cheers!

Muscovys.....Hands down......I wouldn't have anything else.....Prolific ducks, my two hens hatched 66 babies last year they each set three times. Excellent free range ducks and tolerate confinement as well. The best bug catchers ,great entertainment watching them catch flies. Large size and defensive nature deters most would be predators. Only down side is they are excellent fliers so have to clip wings to keep them home and from roosting on the vehicles. And they are very strong and have very sharp claws if they should ever have to be handled. Also I can't stank quackin ducks. They are just too noisy for me.

Second choice for me would be Runners. I had some show quality white Runners years ago and they were so fun. Fairly quiet for quackin ducks, and don't fly much. The best layers, Runners will out lay and chicken out there in my opinion. They literally laid everyday without fail, great big blue green eggs. Sadly a bobcat got them one night, but I got the bobcat the next night.

Like chickens really stated. Do a lot of research into the breeds and find a breed that fits you best. Try small number of different breeds and see what you like/dislike. Talk to breeder of potential breeds you are interested in and get their opinions and experiences. Don't take someone's word that you love this breed or that breed. Or that you should only consider this breed or that breed. Everybody is different. I personally wouldn't have anything but Muscovys but they aren't for everybody. Some people hate them.

Anconas, Magpies, Runners are all good choices! I have them and I must admit I think Magpies are my favorite. My girl as a very sweet and quiet disposition.

oh they're adorable! Are they flightly?

Hi! I'm new to the forum and was wondering which duck would be best with my Cornish and Ameri-Flower chickens (peaceful breeds) and which duck does not require a swimming pool/pond ( I hear Indian runners are terrestrialish.)
