Hi there. Im just wondering what else we can feed our 6 or7 week old chicks. I asked this somewhere else but cant find the thread. They are not interested in bread. But there were other suggestions. I cant remember what they were. Any suggestions thanks.

Strange that they don't want bread. My chickens will perform tricks for bread! You can give your youngsters cooked rice/pasta, fruit, mealworms

(they will love you forever!), crickets if you can catch any, scrambled egg, pancakes, porridge, spinach... Have a look here for more:

At the bottom of the chart is some things you should'n feed, like avocado and salty things. If You feed treats and they don't have access to the outside where they can get grit naturally you must offer some in a bowl or sprinkle it over their food. Coarse sand is great for chicks if you can find any chick grit.

Scrambled eggs - that is always a winner!

Any broken eggs get fried up and go back to the chicks. That's how I tame them. Provide grit at all times. Agree with Sumi - no Avocado. My fiancée accidently fed them (didn't know) - and it didn't hurt them at all, but don't risk it.

At 6 weeks they don't need to be too overloaded with treats, their main diet still need to be their starter/grower. I would keep the treats to a minimum till their 10 or 12 wks. Maybe some alfalfa or clover hay for greens.

I feed my chicks anything I feed the older birds. Especially if they are free ranged. Never lost a chick to anything due to treats. They all grow very well.

Mother hens feed their babies anything they find. As long as the chick has grit to process anything other than starter, it will digest the extras no problem. Scrambled eggs are good from day 1.

They are packed with nutrients. The yolk is absorbed into their belly upon hatching, and that is their food resource for the first 48 hours, so scrambled eggs are not going to hurt them.

I just advise to not feed any scratch or corn if possible. The pieces can be very big and they can choke. Especially on some of the scratch grains.
