I recently added an additional area for my girls and put up a 3 foot garden fence to use during the day when I'm home. They quickly demonstrated their advnaced flying skills while laughing at my pathetic attempt to contain them (one gave me "the wing"). I'm a relative newbie and didn't realize what capable flyers they were.

I watched some videos on trimming wings and subjected them to this torture (my kids were more traumatized than the chickens, one cried)!

We have 2x Buff Orpington, 2x Barred Plymouth Rock and 2x Golden Comets. As for size they are approx. 17 wks. They all have combs and wattles of varying size but haven't started laying.

Will my 3 foot fence work? We are going out of town for a few days and don't want my chicken-sitter needing to chase them around the yard.

Thanks!

Three foot is a little short, too bad it's not 4 foot, can you cover the area or is the area too large? Mine are about the same age and don't go over the 4 foot chainlink, but it might be OK, mine probably would not go over a 3 foot fence, but not sure:)

Wow @centrarchid that's some great information. I'll need to sit down and really look at your results. I'll keep an eye on them and consider getting 4 ft fencing. My intention was that it would be easy to move, but another foot shouldn't be too tough.... Yet another example of how I should learn more before spending money!!

I would wait until pullets about 22 weeks before clipping. Otherwise you may have repeat clipping in short order. I am watching a group of pullets closely to see when adult feathers come. Pullet I clipped closely already has enough feathers to fly / jump high enough to clear 4' fence that stopper her during trial.

My red sex link and one of my barred rocks laugh at the 4 foot fence, even with clipped wings. I'm hoping that as the rock puts on he adult weight that she'll be unable to make the height. The sex link is too gangly and determined to be contained.

I have 3 foot fencing my girls do not go over, it is a mater of training, not wing feather clipping! Wing clipping will stop flight, (only 1 wing needs to be clipped lightly) not jumping fences! And no amount will stop them going over a 3 foot fence, they dont even need wings to jump that high. Maybe a very fat meat bird would have trouble,,,

At first they did go over the 3 foot fence, out came the fish net, and after a few times they no longer go over it. They do not like being trapped by the net!
