I was reading through the Raising Chickens 101 link when I saw the advice to play with the chickies. I can't think of a game that wouldn't terrify them! Please post your favorite Chickie-play past times!

Trying to teach them Acey Deucey, but I keep winning!

Our Brooder is a Rubbermaid Plastic Translucent Bin...Wife discovered that when she gently lowered her hand into the brooder to chick level, and tapped on the walls of the bin, chicks came running. That morphed into a game where Wife taps on the outside of the Bin, and the chicks follow along as Wife moves her hand back and forth on the outside, tapping. The chicks try to peck her Fingertips through the Bin Walls.

We also Put our hands within the Bin, and let the adventurous ones climb on - there is a rush to do so, with Five (of Eight) trying to be First, and pushing others off the Hand. It is comical!

We have just started offering mealworms, and when one chick in particular takes the worm, she runs everywhere, turning and pushing through the congregation, whirling around, racing to get to a corner (Head-In)! It causes quite commotion, and other chicks try to snatch the worm from the one that has it.

These games are with our Just a Week Old Buff Orpingtons. Great fun! Wife is Bonding Well, and The Chicks approve of her Increased "Mothering" Skills. They all agree that She will Never Be Able To Butcher Any One....

I have to agree that the Wife is Not Bothering me so Much lately!

We read that it is good to handle the Chicks every Day, to make them OK with Inspections, and being around Kids, etc....

So we pick up every Chick at least Two times every Day, each of us. We Hold and Pet them, and we talk to them. I let them climb around on My Chest, and Shoulders.

I want my chicks to like me, but what games do I play with them without scaring them to death?

How old are they? Mine have gone through several stages of being scared to death no matter how calm and gentle I am. lol
I've been playing "Peck the chick" with my chicks for a week or so. Just gently tap at them with your finger like you're pecking them. I tap at whatever part of their body I can reach. They seem to like that over gentle stroking. Gets them use to your hand. Pretty soon mine were letting me put my hand over them without running and screaming. Depends on the chick though. I have a few that hate to be touched no matter how I go about it.
Good luck with your chicks!

My grandson made them a little cardboard maze with "challenges". Popsicle sticks, yarn snake ( finger crochet one row to make a 2 foot long "snake"), plastic beads, a paper towel tube. Our 2 week old chickies especially love the yarn snake and will play tug of war with us. Who knew? Tap a sucker stick along the fround, and they will chase it. We are handling them daily in hopes they will get used to us. The Featherbrain on youtube talks about how to get your chicks to bond with you. She's awesome.
