What is a Painted Sussex?

White Sussex are not in standard in US but light are. From the chick pictures I bet it was a misinformed person calling it painted and it really being speckled
Thats fine with me but I paid too much for it! They sold out of Speckled sussexes so I bought the 'painted' for double the price. Maybe they did that on purpose 🤔.

This chick definitely doesn't fit with what I would expect "paint" phenotype to look like.

Here are 2 links I found claiming to sell "paint Sussex", the first does not have pics or a description, both appear to be in the US. The second (facebook) link does have a pic.. it will only go so far before asking me to log in for further viewing, which I cannot do since I don't have an account. If you do, then you can also click on their name (salt run ridge farm) to possibly see more pages.

Interestingly enough as I scrolled through other chick pics (in a tab) on the previous link I noticed they're using Hoover's hatchery pics on several. And have the "paint Sussex" listed there, still with no pic, leading me to believe that they're possibly a third party seller rather than hatching their own.. extra link added here between the original two I was going to post..

I can't see the whole down pattern, but what I can see does look pretty similar to the standard speckled. Hopefully it turns out to be a great bird, and awesome eye candy! Congrats on your new baby. 🥰

Thanks for the information. I'm glad there may be a new lead to what I purchased. I also don't use facebook and I can't figure out how to view the picture without an account. I will wait and see what the chick grows into. I am hoping she will also have the personality of a SS.

I just saw those on Mt healthy's website a few weeks ago when I was looking for chicks. Here's the description it gives

Your chick doesn't look light like I'd expect these are though.
That's what I was thinking. The chick looks like a normal SS. I won't know for 2 weeks because the chick is 2 states away until I pick her up. My sister in law bought 4 other chicks so they should be growing out feathers by then and we can sort it out.

Interesting... Personally I don't think those look like sussex at all..
At least it's stated in their description.. Seen in post #16 (thanks @MGG) , quotes taken from the Mt. Healthy site..

"Despite their name, Paint Sussex are not true Sussex breed, but a hybrid breed that produces a similar look and characteristics as a Sussex, but with better egg production."

"Also known as: Pied Suffolk"

Very frustrating that hatcheries are making hybrids and calling them by one of their parent names.. blue "rocks" (quack), midnight majesty or noir Marans, etc. (also quack).

Still, It's fantastic fun to have a team of folks trying to help one another! :highfive:

I agree, I was fooled, I also dont think hybrids should cost double the price of their counterparts, I don't even care about the egg production. I was looking for the curious and friendly personality more than more eggs. I am happy to meet such knowledgeable and helpful people on this site :)
